Work-Life Balance: The Way Millennials Do It

October 3, 2017

Millennials have consistently been known for making ‘work-life balance‘ a high priority. The ideal work-life balance allows the millennial to be part of a winning organization and remain involved in their community.

Millennials seek employers who have established flexible work environments that allow them to learn, and earn, more overtime.

Flexibility:

Flexibility is regarded by millennials as an important career feature. Aside from offering flexible hours, millennials want to work from locations outside of their employer’s primary site. With the advancements in technology, working remotely is a simple solution. The benefits from allowing an employee to work remotely is linked to higher levels of loyalty and productivity. Millennials want to be trusted. In the Deloitte Millennial Survey 2017, they found millennials view flexible working arrangements as positively enhancing their personal well-being, health and happiness.

Meeting Life Goals:

Millennials use their knowledge and passion to drive their ambition and goals. Research shows 50% of millennials desire training and a plan for development from their employer. Millennials seek to learn and expand upon their current skill set. For example, millennials will take classes, watch webinars and work extra hours to sharpen their skills. They feel it is important to explore different areas of the organization to find where they can provide valuable contributions. Spend time helping the millennial in your workplace by developing a career plan for growth.

Maintaining Energy:

Altruistic, energetic and optimistic are ways the millennial generation can be described. Millennials are focused on solving social issues and environmental changes. They want to create a positive social change. A Forbes survey found that “80% of millennials are active in their community outside of work.” So, consider planning a time to volunteer as a team for a local non-profit organization. Millennials seek full-time stability, yet they do not want their personal and professional commitments to clash. In fact, many millennials are fine with finishing projects over the weekend or responding to e-mails at night. Millennials are constantly evaluating how they can use their energy to achieve their career goals and love their lives.

Integration:

Historically, we have been taught to keep work and life separate. There is a degree of truth to this; however, millennials understand the overlap is necessary. Millennials accept this by constantly learning and shaping the way they balance the two demands. Similar to the other generations in the workforce, millennials want to be respected and take pride in their workplace. The question you should now ask yourself is: has your company achieved a flexible environment where a work-life balance is valued?
